OpenAI Dips Its Toes Into Hardware With a Keypad for AI Coders

The ChatGPT maker’s first physical product isn’t the Jony Ive-designed gadget everyone expected — it’s a macro pad for managing AI agents.

OpenAI has officially entered the hardware business. But if you were hoping for a futuristic AI companion device or a screenless smart speaker, you might want to hold that thought.

On Wednesday, the company behind ChatGPT unveiled the Codex Micro — a $230 compact keypad designed specifically for developers using its AI coding assistant, Codex. The device is a collaboration with Work Louder, a Canada-based maker of programmable keyboards and macro pads. And yes, it’s essentially a tiny square block of buttons that sits next to your regular keyboard.

What exactly is the Codex Micro?

Technically, it’s more of a programmable macro pad than a full keyboard. The device — officially named the kbd-1.0-codex-micro — features 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary dial and a planar joystick. It connects via Bluetooth or USB-C and is compatible with both Mac and Windows machines.

The keypad’s six illuminated “Agent Keys” are perhaps its most distinctive feature. These frosted keys use RGB lighting to display the real-time status of Codex agents. Green indicates an unread message or completed task, blue means the agent is thinking, orange signals it needs approval or has a question, and red means an error has occurred. The idea is simple: instead of constantly switching between chat windows to check on your AI agents, you can glance at the keypad and know exactly what’s happening.

Beyond the status indicators, the device offers a handful of physical controls designed to streamline common coding workflows. The joystick can be programmed to trigger actions like code review, error debugging, and code refactoring. A set of command keys can be assigned to accept or reject changes, push-to-talk, start new chats, or branch threads. The rotary dial, meanwhile, adjusts Codex’s “reasoning level” — essentially controlling how much compute power and time the AI spends on a given task.

All controls are configurable through the ChatGPT desktop application. The package also includes 32 interchangeable keycaps with Codex-themed icons, allowing users to customize the layout to their liking. Buyers can choose between “clicky” (tactile, audible) and “silent” mechanical switches. Pre-orders are now open, with an estimated ship date of July 24.

A limited run, not a mass-market play

OpenAI has been clear that this is not a mainstream product. The company told TechCrunch that the Codex Micro is a “limited-run collaboration,” suggesting it’s more of a novelty item than a device designed for mass appeal. The company hasn’t disclosed how many units will be available. It’s being sold through OpenAI’s “Supply Co.” storefront as part of a “Work Louder Co-Lab” collaboration.

The device closely resembles Work Louder’s existing Creator Micro 2 and Frame Micro products, which also feature 12 keys, a knob, and a joystick. Those products sell for around $174 to $199, making the Codex Micro’s $230 price tag a premium — but not an outrageous one — for the OpenAI branding and direct integration.

Work Louder says the Codex Micro is the only “AI controller that is directly integrated into Codex”. For developers who spend their days juggling multiple AI agents, the promise is tangible: fewer mouse clicks, less context switching, and more time actually writing code.

Not the hardware everyone was waiting for

The Codex Micro’s launch comes amid intense speculation about OpenAI’s broader hardware ambitions. The company has been rumored for months to be developing a consumer AI device with io Products, the hardware startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive — a project OpenAI reportedly acquired for $6.5 billion last year. That device is widely expected to be a portable, screenless smart speaker that can move on its own and serve as a “humanlike AI companion” capable of playing media, controlling home appliances, and answering questions through ChatGPT. Reports suggest it could be announced by the end of this year and launch in 2027.

The Codex Micro, in other words, is something of a warm-up act. It’s a niche accessory for a niche audience — developers using OpenAI’s coding tools — rather than the consumer-facing hardware that has generated so much buzz.

A backdrop of legal drama

The launch also comes at an awkward moment for OpenAI’s hardware ambitions. Last week, Apple sued OpenAI in federal court in California, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets related to Apple’s manufacturing processes and products still in development. The lawsuit specifically names two former Apple employees now at OpenAI, as well as io Products, the Ive-founded firm OpenAI acquired. Apple has reportedly called OpenAI’s hardware business “rotten to its core” in the legal filings. OpenAI has denied the allegations.

The Codex Micro, for what it’s worth, appears to be insulated from that legal dispute. It’s a relatively simple macro pad built on an existing Work Louder design, not the kind of cutting-edge consumer hardware that would involve the trade secrets Apple is fighting over. As Engadget put it, the Codex Micro is “the least troubled of OpenAI’s current hardware projects”.

Mixed reactions from the community

Online reaction to the Codex Micro has been, predictably, mixed. Some Reddit users have questioned whether the release was a joke, while others have criticized the $230 price tag as steep for a peripheral aimed at a narrow set of developer workflows. The device’s target audience is limited: you need to be a Codex user, you need to want physical controls for AI agents, and you need to be willing to pay a premium for the privilege.

But for those who fit that profile, the Codex Micro offers something that software alone can’t: tactile, immediate control over AI agents without diving into menus. It’s a small step into hardware for OpenAI — and a sign that the company sees physical products as part of its future, even if that future is still taking shape.
